Define Mesothelioma:
Mesothelioma is a rare & aggressive type of cancer that affects the mesothelial cells. It is commonly associated with Asbestos in which the cancer is brought on by inhalation of dangerous asbestos fibres that cover the outer surfaces of our body organs. With the help of Tylers, you could be eligible for an industrial disease claim.
It is caused by the transformation of mesothelial cells in the mesothelium, a protective lining on vital organs of the body. Mesothelioma can be found in the lungs, the heart, or the abdomen. Mesothelioma can form in three different types:
- Pleural mesothelioma – this is the most common form of mesothelioma. A lining is surrounding the lungs, called the pleura, is affected by inhalation of the dangerous asbestos fibres.
- Peritoneal mesothelioma – Peritoneal Mesothelioma is not as common, but it is very similar to Pleural Mesothelioma. A tumour develops on the lining of the abdomen preventing it from working properly. Peritoneal mesothelioma is considered the second most common form of mesothelioma cancer.
- Pericardial mesothelioma – The rarest form that affects the heart. Cancer attacks the protective covering of the heart.
All three types of mesothelioma are caused by asbestos exposure.
Mesothelioma will have a huge effect on a person’s life and the lives of those close to them. Here are some facts about this terrible disease:
- Asbestos is the only known cause of Mesothelioma.
- The first diagnosis of Mesothelioma was way back in 1964.
- There are three histological types, which are epithelial, sarcomatoid and biphasic.
- The peak for global Mesothelioma claims cases is expected to be around 2020.
- Erionite, which is an asbestiform mineral, is linked with Mesothelioma.

What are the stages of Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma stages differ depending on where the sufferer has the disease, and staging can tell doctors how far the disease has spread. This will help the doctor to decide which treatment they will need. Mesothelioma is usually diagnosed at an advanced stage. Below you can see the stages of the mesothelioma.
Stage 1a Mesothelioma
The outer layer of the pleura is affected by the mesothelioma, which usually happens on one side of the chest wall only. There is a chance that the mesothelioma has grown into the pleural tissue, which covers the diaphragm.
Stage 1b Mesothelioma
The inner pleural layer, which is closest to the lungs, has now been affected by the mesothelioma. It is still on one side of the chest, and the diaphragm and lung tissue remain currently unaffected.
Stage 2 Mesothelioma
The mesothelioma has now started to spread to both layers of the pleura, but it remains on one side of the body but has now started to form an enlarged tumour mass on the pleural tissue surrounding the lungs. There is a chance that it has started to spread to the diaphragm muscle or even the lung tissue.
Stage 3 Mesothelioma
The covering of the heart called the pericardium, and the chest wall has now started to be affected by the mesothelioma. At stage 3 it can still be removed by surgery. There is also a chance that is has spread to the lymph nodes on the same chest side.
Stage 4 Mesothelioma
At this stage, the mesothelioma cannot be removed by surgery because it has spread too much to different parts of the chest wall. It has possibly also spread through the diaphragm and into the peritoneum. Other affected areas could include the pleura on the other side of the body, chest organs, the lymph nodes and other parts of the body.
What are the symptoms of Mesothelioma?
Very similar to Asbestosis, after exposure to asbestos fibres a person who suffers from Mesothelioma may only start to show symptoms after 15-50 years. Some people may confuse pleural thickening for Mesothelioma, but it is better to visit your doctor in either case. These symptoms may be as follows:
Pleural Mesothelioma
- Breathlessness
- Weight loss
- Pain in the chest & lower back (caused by fluid build-up around the pleura, known as pleural effusion).
- Persistent coughing
Peritoneal Mesothelioma
- Pains & swelling in the abdomen area
- Constantly feeling & being sick
- Loss of appetite
- Diarrhoea and constipation
- Weight loss
What are the treatment options for Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma Surgery Treatment
It is becoming more and more common these days for surgeons to remove or cut out a part of the tumour that has formed on your lungs. This practice has become more and more common with Peritoneal Mesothelioma & Pleural Mesothelioma. This practice can be life-changing, and an increasing number of surgeons are heading down this route. Removing tumours is the most efficient way of treating cancer & possibly eliminating it altogether.
Mesothelioma Chemotherapy Treatment
Considered the least invasive treatment of Mesothelioma and is a cocktail of drugs that are combined to kill any cancer. Chemotherapy drugs can come in different strengths depending on how developed the cancer is. Chemotherapy drugs are delivered by intravenous drip.
Mesothelioma Radiation Treatment
Radiation therapy is designed to shrink the tumour by combining it together with other treatments. Although this may work, it is considered a dangerous practice because of the harmful toxins that can get passed into your bodies organs. While it can kill the cancer cells, it can also damage your DNA.
Mesothelioma Multimodal Therapy Treatment
This is the more preferred option for many doctors when it comes to treating cancer; they opt for a more multimodal approach with a mix of all three latter treatments Chemotherapy, Surgery & Radiation. This practice will require specialists from all three practices and allows somebody suffering from Mesothelioma to go back to an active lifestyle.
Mesothelioma Immunotherapy Treatment
A practice that involves the manipulation of a sufferer’s immune system to fight off the cancer growth. Cells from the patient’s body are removed, altered, and returned to the body.
Mesothelioma Gene Therapy Treatment
The involvement of injecting the patient with a virus that will attack the cancerous cells.
Mesothelioma Photodynamic Therapy
The use of light energy that targets the cancerous cells. With the use of drugs, it is possible to make the cancerous cells vulnerable when it comes to a certain light wavelength. This is considered a treatment that is now very harmful to the patient.
Mesothelioma Clinical Trials
A lot of cancer patients tend to opt for the clinical trials. Although this is never guaranteed it will help with the future research of Mesothelioma cancer.

Other Mesothelioma Meanings
Papillary Mesothelioma (Well-differentiated Papillary Mesothelioma).
An unusual form of Peritoneal cancer that is in its low form. It is reported some women patients have contracted Papillary Mesothelioma without being exposed to Asbestos. This is a very rare form of Mesothelioma and based on history there are only 14 known cases, eleven men and three women.
Metastatic Mesothelioma
Metastiatic Mesothelioma is cancer that spreads, forms & develops in another part of the body. This can also happen with Mesothelioma as cancer can spread through the bloodstream & lymph nodes. Usually, doctors are aware of certain cancers that can Metastasize to other organs. Mesothelioma is considered an aggressive form of cancer that can grow quickly and form in other parts of the body within months. It can spread to your heart, lungs, chest & abdominal areas.
Malignant Mesothelioma
The tumour of the cells in the pleura, Malignant Mesothelioma is said to rarely attack distant organs. It presents itself with people between the ages of 40 & 70 years. 80% of the cases reported are by asbestos exposure, and at least 75-80% of them are said to be occupational. If patients are suffering from pleural thickening or pleural effusion, then Mesothelioma should be considered.
Desmoplastic Mesothelioma
Another rare and aggressive type of Mesothelioma cancer that is a common variant of Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma. It is said to represent 5% to 10% of all mesothelioma cases within the UK and usually attacks the chest.
Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma
This is a form of Mesothelioma cancer that represents between 5-20% of all known cases within the UK. Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma is the least common form of cancer in the three cell types, the sarcomatoid, the epithelioid & the biphasic. It usually attacks the lining of the lungs (the pleura). This cancer form has been said to have a high resistance to treatments and unfortunately a higher death rate.
Benign Mesothelioma
A non-cancerous type of Mesothelioma that is quite rare in all patients who suffer from some form of Mesothelioma. It has a high success rate when it comes to treatments and patients can receive a good prognosis. It is also not the result of asbestos exposure and can occur at any age.
