What is Grade 4 whiplash?

As you may already be aware, whiplash mainly affects the neck and is caused by a sudden jolt. It can occur when your head is suddenly thrust forward, backwards, or to the side. Whiplash injuries can range from minor to severe, and Grade 4 whiplash can usually be considered moderate to severe, depending on your symptoms and how long they last.

If you’re suffering from Grade 4 whiplash, you may experience:

  • Intense neck pain that may spread to your shoulders, arms, and upper back
  • Neck stiffness
  • A reduced range of motion in your head and neck
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness and balance problems
  • Tingling or numbness in your arms and hands

Can Grade 4 whiplash lead to serious injuries or long-term conditions?

Grade 4 whiplash injuries can be relatively serious. However, in most cases, you are likely to make a full recovery within a few months.

In the most extreme cases of Grade 4 whiplash, you may be left with some chronic pain or reduced mobility in your neck and shoulders.

Grade 4 Whiplash Compensation Claims

What are the common causes of Grade 4 whiplash injuries?

In most cases, Grade 4 whiplash injuries are caused by moderate to serious traffic collisions. Head-on collisions, rear-end shunts, and side-swipe road traffic accidents can all cause sudden head jolts, leading to whiplash of all grades.

However, car crashes aren’t the only potential causes of Grade 4 whiplash. It can also occur as a result of:

Although there are other causes, it’s important to note that the compensation amounts set out by the 2021 whiplash tariff reforms only apply to injuries caused by road traffic accidents.

What treatment is available for Grade 4 whiplash injuries?

Because Grade 4 whiplash injuries are usually more serious than lower grades, you may find you need more medical care. You may need to see your GP to discuss painkiller options and will likely need to rest and take time off work while recovering.

Hot and cold packs can help reduce any swelling, and you may need to seek support from a physiotherapist or other specialist care providers.

If you do require any of these, we recommend making sure you hold onto receipts for travel, medical bills, and any other costs accrued. These will all act as evidence to support your whiplash injury compensation claim.

Can I claim compensation for Grade 4 whiplash injuries?

You may well be entitled to Grade 4 whiplash compensation as long as:

  • You can show that your whiplash is a direct result of an accident.
  • You can prove the accident in question wasn’t your fault.
  • You have evidence that another party is liable for your injuries.
  • You are 18 or over (if you are younger, a parent or guardian can claim on your behalf).
  • You start making your whiplash claim within three years of the accident (unless you are under 18, in which case there are exceptions. If a parent doesn’t claim on your behalf, you can wait until you reach 18, in which case you will have until you turn 21 to make your claim).

How much could you be entitled to?

In terms of compensation amounts for Grade 4 whiplash, you’ll receive an amount.

Based on the 2021 updated whiplash tariff system. This focuses on how long your injuries last, with the maximum time frame being 24 months. The longer your Grade 4 whiplash injuries last, the more compensation you could be eligible to claim.

Compensation amounts for Grade 4 whiplash

Are you wondering how much compensation you could claim for Grade 4 whiplash injuries? But with whiplash, the duration of your injuries is the determining factor.

Since May 2021, a fixed tariff system has been in place to simplify whiplash injury compensation amounts and reduce the number of false claims. Take a look at the full table of compensation figures on our Whiplash Claims page.

As whiplash is often caused by road traffic accidents, you might experience other injuries at the same time. If you suffer minor to moderate cuts and bruises, you could claim up to £2,990.

Similarly, if the accident causes any facial injuries that lead to scarring, there’s a chance you could be eligible to claim up to £4,310.

If an incident is serious enough to cause grade 4 injuries, it could also lead to spinal injuries. In some cases, a spinal disc injury can cause restricted movement in your neck.

If you’ve suffered Grade 4 whiplash, it is unlikely that your spinal injury will lead to long-term disability, but you could claim up to £9,630 in compensation.

If you experience Grade 4 whiplash symptoms for more than three months but fewer than six months, you could be eligible for a maximum compensation amount of £520.

For longer-lasting whiplash injuries, you’re likely to receive a higher amount of compensation. For symptoms that last more than six months but less than nine months, you may be eligible for up to £895.
