What is Grade 1 whiplash?
You may already know that whiplash is a common injury that mainly affects the neck. It can occur in car crashes and other incidents where your head and neck are suddenly thrust forwards, backwards, or sideways. The motion causes your neck muscles to tense, and this can lead to pain, stiffness, and discomfort, among other symptoms.
Whiplash is categorised into five grades, and Grade 1 whiplash refers to the mildest of the categories. Grade 1 whiplash can cause:
- Mild discomfort
- Neck pain or tenderness
- Stiffness in the neck
With this type of whiplash, you won’t usually experience any bruising or neurological symptoms (such as numbness or tingling) and should usually retain a normal range of motion.
In most cases, Grade 1 whiplash symptoms clear up within a few days or weeks.
What are the main causes of Grade 1 whiplash?
As with all other whiplash grades, Grade 1 whiplash most commonly arises after a road traffic accident. It can occur after low-impact collisions and may not always be apparent immediately, so we always recommend getting a medical check-up, even after a very minor car accident.
Other causes of Grade 1 whiplash can include:
- Falling
- Being knocked off your bike or feet by a vehicle
- Violence (including domestic abuse)
- Sports accidents (for example, during football or boxing matches)
Please note, the compensation amounts described in the 2021 whiplash tariff reforms only apply to injuries caused by road traffic accidents.
How to treat Grade 1 whiplash symptoms
Because Grade 1 whiplash injuries tend to be minor, you can usually treat them with over-the-counter painkillers and rest. We recommend limiting your physical activity if you have whiplash to avoid making the pain or discomfort worse.
Can I get compensation for Grade 1 whiplash?
As with any other form of personal injury, the amount of compensation you can receive for whiplash will mainly depend on the overall severity of your injuries. The more serious your injuries, the more compensation you will be entitled to.
In May 2021, the government introduced a new whiplash tariff system to simplify compensation amounts and reduce the amount of false claims. This system focuses on the duration of your whiplash injuries, offering set amounts that increase the longer your symptoms last.
Because Grade 1 whiplash generally clears up within a few days or weeks, you will usually only receive a small amount of compensation if you are eligible.
Bear in mind that, depending on the circumstances and any other injuries you suffered, you may be eligible for other forms of compensation after a road traffic accident. In some cases, you can claim for psychological damages as well as any physical symptoms.
If you think you may be eligible for Grade 1 whiplash compensation — on its own or along with another injury — the team at Tylers Solicitors can help. Our no-win, no-fee legal experts can work with you to get the compensation you need to move on from your life, so please get in touch to discuss your case.
What are the other whiplash grades?
If your injuries are too severe to be classified as Grade 1 whiplash, then you may be able to claim differently. More severe or enduring whiplash symptoms may be classed as one of the following:
- Grade 2 whiplash: More serious than Grade 1, this whiplash category covers injuries, including moderate neck pain and stiffness that might result in reduced motion and can last for a few weeks or months.
- Grade 3 whiplash: If you experience Grade 3 whiplash, your symptoms may last for a few months and can include severe neck pain and stiffness.
- Grade 4 whiplash: This level of whiplash can cause severe neck, back, and shoulder pain and could last for a year or more in some cases.
- Grade 5 whiplash: The most serious of whiplash grades, this category covers longer-lasting injuries, including intense neck pain and a potential loss of mobility.
