With whiplash being such a common RTA injury, it is split into five different categories. Known as ‘grades’, these indicate how severe the whiplash is. For those experiencing Grade 3 whiplash, you may be wondering how to go about claiming compensation.

What is Grade 3 whiplash?
Whiplash happens when your neck lurches suddenly, causing muscle tension and strain. The results of whiplash can vary from very minor to severe, encompassing a broad range of symptoms.
If you’re suffering from Grade 3 whiplash, you may experience:
- Intense neck pain and tenderness
- Stiffness, which may limit your neck mobility
- Pain that radiates to your head, shoulders, and back
- Muscle weakness
- Tingling or numbness in your arms
- Headaches
- Dizziness
Is Grade 3 whiplash serious?
Grade 3 whiplash is more serious than Grades 1 and 2, and it can affect your daily life. However, while this type of whiplash can cause intense discomfort, it shouldn’t cause long-term problems.
You’ll usually recover within a few months but may find you need to take time off depending on how severe your issues are and what you do for work.
What are the causes of Grade 3 Whiplash?
Can I Make a Claim for Grade 3 Whiplash Compensation in the UK?
Grade 3 whiplash injuries, just like other forms of whiplash, are mainly caused by traffic collisions. Car crashes and other RTAs are the most common cause. However, you can also experience Grade 3 whiplash following:
- Sports injuries
- Violent attacks
- Falling
- Being hit by a vehicle as a pedestrian or cyclist
Ultimately, any action that leads to a sudden thrusting forward of your head and neck can lead to some form of whiplash.
Please bear in mind, however, that the compensation amounts we’re looking at in relation to the 2021 whiplash tariff reforms only apply to injuries caused by road traffic accidents.
How should you treat Grade 3 whiplash?
Because Grade 3 whiplash tends to involve more severe symptoms than Grades 1 and 2, you may need to seek more medical treatment.
Over-the-counter painkillers can help, but you may also need stronger prescription drugs to ease your muscles. With this in mind, it’s essential to speak with your GP.
In some cases, you may also need support from specialists, such as a physiotherapist or neurologist.
If you do need additional medical treatment, make sure you keep hold of any bills and travel receipts, as these will act as important pieces of evidence in your Grade 3 compensation claim.
Can I claim compensation for Grade 3 whiplash in the UK?
To work out if you’re eligible for compensation, it’s best to speak with an experienced solicitor, like our legal team at Tylers Solicitors.
We can assess your situation to see if you have a valid claim and how much you may be entitled to. Before getting in touch, we recommend making sure that:
- You’re starting your claim within three years of the accident
- You were not solely at fault
- You have evidence that another party was at fault
- Your Grade 3 whiplash was a direct result of your accident
- You have medical evidence to prove your injuries
You have contact details for the other party involved and any witnesses
From there, we can help determine your potential claim amount. With most personal injuries, the compensation that you receive will be dependent on the severity of your injuries.
The more serious your injuries, the more compensation you will be able to claim. For example, a grade 3 whiplash claim will be worth more than a Grade 1 or 2 whiplash claim.
What is the whiplash tariff system?
While Grade 3 whiplash claims do tend to warrant higher compensation than Grade 1 and 2, it’s important to note that there has been a set tariff system in place since 2021.
Under these guidelines, the amount you can receive for whiplash injuries depends on the duration of your injuries. The longer your whiplash symptoms last — up to 24 months — the more you may be entitled to.

Grade 3
Previously, whiplash compensation amounts varied broadly depending on symptoms, severity, and duration. The system has been streamlined, and there are now set amounts guided by how long your whiplash symptoms last.
If you’ve experienced Grade 3 whiplash and are wondering about the average pay-out amounts in the UK, we have some ballpark figures for you.
Because Grade 3 whiplash tends to last longer than Grades 1 and 2, but you’ll usually recover within a year, you’re likely to receive between £495 and £1,390 in compensation.
Please see our Whiplash Claims page for a full table of potential whiplash compensation claim amounts.
Other injuries associated with whiplash
Whiplash often occurs as the result of a car crash or another road traffic accident. This means you may suffer other injuries, too. If the incident was serious enough to cause a Grade 3 whiplash injury, then it’s possible that you might have suffered minor to moderate facial injuries, which could lead to minor scarring
If you’ve suffered from facial injuries as the result of an accident that wasn’t your fault, you may be able to get up to £4,310 in compensation.
Grade 3 whiplash injuries that last from 3 to 6 months
If your Grade 3 whiplash injuries last more than three months but fewer than six, you may be able to claim up to £520 in compensation.
Grade 3 whiplash injuries that last from 6 to 9 months
For Grade 3 whiplash that takes longer to heal, you may be entitled to a higher compensation amount. If it takes more than six months but less than nine for you to recover, you may be eligible for up to £895.
Grade 3 whiplash injuries that last from 9 to 12 months
Sometimes, Grade 3 whiplash can take longer than nine months but less than 12 to heal. In this situation, you could receive up to £1,390 in compensation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does whiplash get progressively worse?
Whiplash can get worse over the first couple of days, and it can take a few hours to set in after a collision. Because of this potential delay, it’s important to get a medical check-up after any road traffic accident, even if you feel fine at the time.
What are the different whiplash grades?
If you don’t feel like Grade 3 whiplash symptoms match your injuries, you may be eligible for a different grade of claim. Your injuries may match one of the following whiplash grades:
- Grade 1:The most minor category of whiplash. This includes neck pain and potential stiffness that usually improves within a few days or weeks.
- Grade 2:More severe than Grade 1 but less intense than Grade 3, these whiplash injuries can include
- Grade 4:If you suffer from Grade 4 whiplash, you may experience more intense neck pain than Grade 3. You may also suffer from shoulder and back pain as well as headaches and dizziness. Symptoms can last for a year or more.
- Grade 5: This is the most severe whiplash grade, which can last up to two years. You may experience very intense neck pain and reduced mobility.
If you’re unsure which category your whiplash fits into and whether you have a valid claim, feel free to contact the team at Tylers Solicitors for expert legal advice.
