What are the most common causes of care home injuries?
In most cases, care home injuries are caused by the negligence of care home employees.
What is nursing home negligence?
Care homes and nursing homes are residential centres dedicated to supporting and looking after vulnerable people. With this in mind, many precautions should be in place to protect residents from harm.
When the right safeguarding procedures aren’t in place, residents can be at risk of nursing home negligence — and this can come in all forms, including:
- Not maintaining high standards of hygiene
- Medical errors
- Failure to provide the right nutrition
Improper site management — for example, obstructions left in hallways, or no wet floor signs to highlight spillages
It’s important to note that negligence differs from abuse. While neglect is the failure to provide the right care, abuse is intentional harm.
Both, however, can cause care home residents huge amounts of suffering and distress.
Care home injuries caused by another resident
Another potential cause of injury in a care home is assault by another resident. This can include anything from bruising to human bites, which also carry the risk of infection without the right medical treatment.
What kinds of care home injury could I claim compensation for?
You can claim compensation for any kind of care home injury that wasn’t your fault. Whether your injury has been caused by negligence, abuse or assault from another resident of the care home, you may be entitled to claim compensation.
What is the most common injury in a nursing home?
In our time processing care home compensation claims, some of the most common injuries we’ve seen include:
- Scalds and burns: Whether it’s from spilling hot tea, touching a hot appliance, or being out in the sun without the right protection, care home residents can suffer from scalds and burns if the right supervision and maintenance aren’t in place.
- Injuries caused by slips, trips and falls: Care homes need to have robust safety measures in place, especially for residents with mobility issues.
Poorly maintained care homes can lead to slips, trips, and falls. These could be caused by spillages, obstructions, and inadequate supervision. Slips, trips, and falls may lead to bruising, soft tissue damage, and broken bones, In severe accidents, a fall may lead to head injuries and brain damage. - Human bites: Sometimes, residents are at risk of being bitten by another resident in the care home. This can cause bruising and cuts. In some cases, there may be a risk of infection if the bite wound isn’t treated in the right way.
- Bedsores: Care home residents who are bedridden or have to rest in bed after an operation are at risk of pressure sores or ‘bedsores’.
These occur when patients or residents are left in one position for too long — the pressure can lead to skin and tissue damage, eventually causing open sores that can be very painful. In severe cases, they can lead to infection.
Bedsores vary in severity and are categorised into ‘grades’:
– Grade 1 bedsores are the least severe, causing temporary discomfort and skin discolouration but no open sores
– Grade 2 pressure sores cause damage to the top layers of skin and may create some swelling.
– Grade 3 bedsores are deeper ulcers that extend into the fatty layer beneath the skin. They can become infected and require special treatment.
– Grade 4 pressure sores are deep ulcers that can extend as far as muscle and bone and usually require surgery. They can cause high risk of infection and, in the most severe cases may lead to gangrene and amputation.
These are just some examples of care home injuries that could be eligible for compensation. If you’ve experienced an accident in a care home that wasn’t your fault — or you’re worried about a loved one who has — the team at Tylers Solicitors is here to help.

How much could I claim?
Can I claim compensation on behalf of a parent or spouse who has suffered a care home injury?
If your parent, spouse, or another close loved one has been the victim of care home negligence, they will usually need to make the claim themselves, if possible.
There are a couple of circumstances, however, that may mean you can claim on their behalf:
- If they no longer have the mental capacity to make the legal decision for themselves.
- If they have passed away.
It’s important to mention that only the specified next of kin can claim on behalf of the injury victim.

Care home claim amounts
If you’ve suffered a care home injury that wasn’t your fault, you may be entitled to compensation. The amount of compensation you’re likely to receive depends on the severity and long-term impact of any injuries you’ve sustained.
As with most personal injuries, the more serious and life-altering the effects, the more compensation you’re likely to receive.

Compensation for slips, trips & falls at a care home
Slips, trips and falls remain some of the most common causes of injury in the UK. They can be caused by a wide range of hazards, from wet floors to unmarked steps. In care homes, many residents have low clearance due to their age or lack of mobility. The impact of a slip, trip or fall can also be more serious and life-altering. For many care home residents, falls can cause pelvic and hip damage.
The compensation amount you may receive depends on how severe your injuries are. A minor pelvis fracture may lead to £15,370 in compensation, while a very severe head injury may warrant £493,000.
Compensation for scalding & burns at a care home
Whether you’ve been scalded or burned by spilt liquids or cleaning agents, you may be able to make a claim for compensation. The most serious scalding and burn injuries can be extremely serious and have a long-term impact on your health. Scalds and burns can cause chronic pain and mobility loss as well as cosmetic scarring.
For serious burns, you may be eligible to claim up to £127,930.
Compensation for physical assault at a care home
If you’ve been assaulted by an employee, guest, or resident in the care home, you should be entitled to claim compensation.
Depending on the severity of your injuries, you may be able to claim as much as £44,480 for serious facial fractures.
Compensation for bedsores at a care home
Some care home residents are bed-bound and unable to stand or move without support. Prolonged time in bed can cause pressure ulcers. If you’ve sustained bedsores after being left in place for too long, you will be able to claim against your care home for negligence.
Based on the compensation amounts in the Judicial College Guidelines for injuries with similar severity of pain and long-term impact, such as skin damage and soft tissue injuries, you may be able to claim up to £4,820 for minor, Grade 1 bedsores. For more serious pressure sores causing gangrene that results in amputation, you may be eligible for up to £245,900.
