What is Grade 5 whiplash?
Whiplash occurs when your head and neck are thrust suddenly backwards, forwards, or to the side, and it’s a common injury in vehicle collisions. Whiplash injuries are categorised into five different ‘grades’, depending on the severity and duration of the symptoms.
Grade 5 whiplash is the most serious of the categories, and it tends to be triggered by high-impact car accidents.
If you experience Grade 5 whiplash, you may suffer from the following symptoms:
- Intense neck pain that radiates to your neck, shoulders, and back
- Reduced mobility in your neck and shoulders
- Headaches, often starting at the base of your skull
- Blurred vision
- Numbness or tingling in your arms
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- Trouble sleeping
This level of whiplash can have a big impact on your daily life and often leads to time off work. It can last for months, and symptoms can potentially persist for up to two years. Because of the long-lasting and serious effects, some people with Grade 5 whiplash also experience anxiety and mood changes.
Can Grade 5 whiplash have permanent effects?
While most people find their Grade 5 whiplash symptoms resolve within 24 months, some experience ongoing stiffness and chronic pain.
If an accident is serious enough to cause Grade 5 whiplash, it may also result in other serious injuries, including damage to your spine or back.
If your Grade 5 whiplash was caused by an accident that wasn’t your fault and has led to long-lasting symptoms or other serious injuries, you could be eligible for compensation.

How do you treat Grade 5 whiplash?
Grade 5 whiplash is more serious than grades 1 to 4, and you’ll usually need a higher level of medical support. You may require:
- Pain medication and muscle relaxants from your GP
- Rest and time off work
- Hot and cold packs
- A neck brace
- Treatment from a physiotherapist
- Counselling or psychological support
What are the most common causes of Grade 5 whiplash?
Most whiplash injuries — particularly severe Grade 5 whiplash injuries — are often caused by serious car accidents or collisions at high speeds. However, you can also suffer whiplash from:
- Falling
- Being knocked off a bike
- Being hit by a vehicle as a pedestrian
Being injured while playing or practising sports (boxing and football are common culprits).
It’s important to note, however, that the compensation amounts we’re looking at from the 2021 whiplash tariff reforms only apply to road traffic accidents.
Can I get compensation for Grade 5 whiplash injuries?
If your Grade 5 whiplash has been caused by an accident that wasn’t your fault, you may be eligible for compensation. We recommend speaking with one of our legal experts to work out if you have a valid claim.
However, if you meet the following criteria, there’s a high chance you could have a viable case.
- You have medical proof of your Grade 5 whiplash injuries and the impact they have had on your everyday life.
- You can show that the whiplash is a direct result of an accident.
- You can prove you were not solely responsible for the accident.
- You can prove that another party was at fault (or that there was shared liability).
- You are over 18 (or you have a parent or guardian who can claim on your behalf if you are under 18).
- The accident occurred in the past three years (there are exceptions if you were under 18 at the time of the incident).
We can talk you through these elements and help you gather the evidence required to support your case. When you speak with a legal expert at Tylers Solicitors, we’ll also discuss the level of compensation you may be able to receive in line with the tariff set by The Whiplash Injury Regulations of 2021.

Grade 5 whiplash compensation amounts
When you’ve been through a serious accident and suffered Grade 5 whiplash as a result, it’s natural to wonder how much compensation you may be able to claim.
As with any kind of personal injury, including road traffic accidents, the amount of compensation you can claim depends on the severity of your injuries. However, with whiplash, the duration of your symptoms is the determining factor — the longer your injuries last, the more money you will receive.
In 2021, the government introduced a whiplash compensation tariff to make claims more straightforward and to reduce the number of false claims being made. This tariff outlines set compensation amounts that increase depending on the number of months your whiplash has affected you.
As Grade 5 whiplash tends to be the most severe of the whiplash grades (often lasting up to 24 months), it usually results in a higher compensation amount. You can see the full table of compensation amounts on our Whiplash Claims page.
