What is Wartenberg Syndrome?

Wartenberg’s Syndrome is a form of damage which does not impact your motor functions but can cause a great deal of pain. This is when the superficial branch of the radial nerve becomes trapped. This kind of isolated neuropathy can be extremely painful to manage as well as treat, particularly if it has developed over many years. In most cases, this form of mononeuropathy is caused by one impact or trauma to your arm.

Wartenberg syndrome is commonly due to the compression of the superficial radial nerve in the forearm. The nerve itself usually gets trapped at its exit point to the subcutaneous plane by the intervening fascia.

What Can I Claim Following Wartenberg Syndrome Compensation?

What are the Symptoms of Wartenberg Syndrome?

Wartenberg symptoms can vary in different levels of seriousness and can really impact your life in either the short or long-term. Just some of the most common symptoms can include:

  • Vague Pain – This pain can vary in intensity throughout the forearm and hand. In some cases, the pain can be so strong that it leads to the limited use of the hand.

  • Paraesthesia – This is a tingling sensation which can be incredibly uncomfortable.

  • Numbness

If you’ve suffered from any of these symptoms in your forearm, then you may be suffering from a case of Wartenberg syndrome.

Can Wartenberg Syndrome be treated?

There is a wide range of treatment options available for Wartenberg’s syndrome. Some of these choices are related to the management of the treatment, whereas there is also a surgical option available for the more extreme cases.

Amongst the most minor, first-line treatments for the syndrome can include removal of tighter constraints, splinting the arm, anti-inflammatory drugs and giving the arm time to rest. There are also several physiotherapy options available, including peripheral nerve stimulation.

In the most extreme cases, there are also medical options available, including surgical decompression of the SNR.

What are the Causes of Wartenberg Syndrome?

There are several examples of trauma or other damage which could lead to developing or instant Wartenberg syndrome. Just some of the most common can include:

  • Tight Arm Wear – Examples can include bracelets, wristwatches and wristbands which can cause the superficial radial nerve (SNR) to become damaged or trapped.

  • Minor Trauma to the Wrist – If you’ve suffered damage to the wrist while at work, or if a surgeon has caused damage to your SNR during surgery, then you could end up suffering from mononeuropathy in your arm or hand.

  • Repetitive Wrist or Forearm Movement – If you’re required to make regular wrist movements while at work, such as typing on a keyboard or working with heavy industrial machinery, then you could trap the SNR. In these instances, the damage is usually caused if you’ve had to rotate your hand or arm for long periods of time without any breaks. In some cases, the syndrome can develop if you’ve had poor or limited on-the-job training.
