How Will a Sinus Cancer Diagnosis Impact My Life?
It is one of the saddest facts of modern life is that one in every three people will have to battle cancer at some point throughout their lives. Nobody quite knows why the number has become so high over the past few decades and although much progress is being made every day as a result of the dedicated work of scientists and the charities that employ them to conduct their vital research, a cure has unfortunately yet to be discovered. Indeed, in many cases, patients go on to make a full recovery from this devastating disease which is a true testament to the pioneering research being conducted to save and prolong lives. More new discoveries are made all the time as we edge closer to the eventual discovery of a cure. At the moment, however, many more people lose their fight against this cruel illness, which has a devastating effect on the lives of the loved ones left behind.
Cancer appears to have almost as many causes as it does victims. Nobody knows for sure what its causes are, although some put it down to lifestyle or hereditary factors, or perhaps a combination of the two. Others believe that modern life more generally may be the cause and they include in this the effects of our working lives. Of the many different cancers thought to originate from activities related to work, sinus cancer is perhaps one of the lesser-known. However, it cannot be underestimated how serious this particular cancer can be to the affected person and those closest to them.
What Is Sinus Cancer?
Sinus cancer is a type of carcinoma that involves one of the two sinus cavities that make up the nose. Also known as Paranasal Cancer due to its proximity to the nose, it is one of the rarest forms of the disease, accounting for just 0.2% of all cases worldwide. The vast majority of patients affected by this particular cancer are men between the ages of 40 and 70, although it has been known in extremely rare cases to affect children.
What Causes Sinus Cancer?
The causes of Sinus Cancer are perhaps even more of a mystery to health professionals and experts than more common cancers, although it is a strong possibility that work may be a cause due to the lack of any hereditary link associated with other cancers. Research has also shown that smokers are at a higher risk of developing this particular cancer. This suspected work-related cancer is often cited as being associated with exposure to the organic compound Formaldehyde which is used extensively throughout the industry and in the manufacture of disinfectants and biocides, tissue fixative, embalming agents and in drug testing. Exposure to certain harmful materials and substances without appropriate protection such as metallic elements like nickel and dangerous fumes, and dust from materials such as wood, chromium and leather are also thought to be possible causes.
What are the Symptoms of Sinus Cancer?
The symptoms of Sinus Cancer are often confused with those of Sinusitis, although Sinusitis is not considered a cause. As well as the nasal passages, cancers of this type may also affect the eyes and can sometimes cause problems in other parts of the face. Full or partial loss of sight, blurred vision, bulging of one eye, watering of the eyes and pain above and below the socket can sometimes occur as a result of developing this particular cancer.
Sufferers from Sinus Cancer may also encounter stuffiness that can’t be cleared, nosebleeds, a reduced sense of smell, an excessive emanation of mucous from the nose or draining at the back of the throat. A lump may grow on the face, nose or roof of the mouth and loss of sensation or pain in parts of the face can also occur. Sufferers may also report the feeling of pressure in one of the ears, a difficulty in opening the mouth, wobbly teeth or enlargement of the lymph nodes in the neck.
